Trey and I had both driven to the studio but no one wanted to leave their car behind so we decided to play follow the leader. Unfortunately, I wasn’t lucky enough to find a parking spot right outside the studio so I had to settle for around the corner. Hearing Trey’s Range roar to life I use my finger and motioned for him to follow me. It seems like he got the message because soon enough his car was slowly creeping down the street as I walked. Yes, I was aware that Trey could have just dropped me off to my car but I liked the feel of the cool breeze against my skin. It was definitely a nice night out which was saying a lot for NYC in March. I couldn’t help but wonder how we looked. He probably looked like a creep, slowly driving his car as I walked. His horn beeping got my attention and I looked at his truck as he rolled the window down. “Yo, can I holla at you?” I laughed at his stupidity before playing along. “Sorry, I’m happily taken.” I watched him raise his eyebrows and I just threw a smile at him as we arrived at my car. Unlocking it I slid in and wasted no time taking off.
30 minutes later I pulled up to the gate for the parking garage that sat underneath my building. A very nice but expensive benefit of city living. “Hey, Sophie.” A smile took over the young girls face. “Hi Renee.” Pointing to Trey’s vehicle I spoke up. “I have a guest with me in the Range Rover. Can you let him know to park his car in my guest spot?” She smiled and nodded. “Sure thing Renee. Have a nice night.” Watching the gate rise I returned her gesture. “Thanks Sophie. You too.” I went to my assigned parking spot and soon enough stepped out. I waited about a good minute before Trey was pulling into my guest spot next to me. I looked at Trey who had just gotten out his truck. “Mr. Neverson I don’t appreciate the long wait.” I stated. He was grinning like a Cheshire cat. “Shorty in the booth lost it. It was cute though.” I laughed. I could only imagine. A small smile sat on my face as I shook my head. “Let’s go.”
Walking over to the elevators we waited. I couldn’t help but think about the studio session I had just come out of. It just seemed like perfect timing that I happened to be in the studio and Trey is singing about being the one. Coincidence much? I think not. I had questions for him and I was going to get answers. The elevator arrived and we made our way up to the fourth floor. Getting off the elevator I removed my keys from my pocket as we approached my door. Opening the door I turned and smiled at Trey. “Welcome to my humble abode.” I let out a laugh as he closed the door behind us. Taking off my combat boots I went in my room and placed them in my closet along with my sweater leaving me in my black crew neck and my skinny jeans. Exiting my bedroom I entered my living room to find Trey sprawled out quite comfortably in my couch.
“Renee you should switch houses with me. I’ll pay rent and everything.” He said. I laughed before replying to him.
“How about you pay rent and I can still live here. You can stop by when you want though.” Something clicked in my head. We hadn’t decided what we were going to eat.
“Oh. What do you want to eat?” I asked.
“Whatever you want it doesn’t matter to me. Just wake up when the food gets here.” He fished forty dollars out his wallet and placed it on the table. I shook my head as I watched him fall asleep. Finding my cell phone I dialed the Chinese place that was a few blocks away. “Hi. Can I have a large container of shrimp fried rice and a large container of general tso chicken?” The lady told me my total was 17.75. “Okay. Can I have it delivered to 1402 Lincoln Place apartment 4D?” She told me it would take about twenty minutes. I hung the phone up and accessed my camera. Turning to Trey I took a picture of him sleeping. ‘Let’s see him try to act up now.’ I thought.
Now that Trey decided to nap I didn’t have anything to do or did I. Running into my bedroom I looked around and grabbed my makeup bag before heading back into the living room. Stopping next to Trey I kneeled down and unzipped my bag. “Psst.” No movement. He was knocked. I smiled as I dug through my bag and fished out some red lipstick. I was sure he would appreciate it. After all he did sing about his fondness for red lipstick. As I applied it Trey stirred causing me to freeze. Waiting a few seconds I proceeded until his lips were done. Now it was time for eyeliner. I grabbed some black liquid eyeliner and began a cat like design. As I applied the eyeliner I bit my lip trying to hold in my laughter. Trey was going to kill me. I began digging through my makeup bag once more to find eye shadow to complete the look but the door being knocked stopped me in my tracks. ‘Oh shit.’ I thought. Grabbing my phone I snapped a few pictures before walking to the bedroom and placing my makeup bag back in its rightful place. Taking a few deep breathes I returned to the living room.
Gently shaking Trey he stirred a bit before opening his eyes. “Hey, the food’s here. Go get the door while I set up some plates and what not in the kitchen.” He nodded but groggily got up. I made my way to the kitchen and began removing plates and glasses all while keeping my ears open to hear Trey’s reaction.
I felt like I was on top of the world. I had recorded some amazing music today which had me looking forward to the album. I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to take the album in but I was positive it would be incredible. To make things ten times better Renee and I were on good terms again. I was surprised she accepted my apology but I was glad she did. Now we were on our way to her place to grab a bite to eat which sounded amazing. A nigga was hungry. I’ve been up since 9 and all I had eaten was a bowl of cereal. Working hard caused me to work up an appetite.
The ride to Renee’s crib wasn’t a bad one. Pulling up to the gate I winded down my window. “Good Night. Renee wou-” She stopped talking as she looked at me in disbelief.
“Oh my gosh Trey Songz! I love you so much.” I smiled at her.
“I love you too baby girl.”
“Can I get a picture?”
“Anything for you.” I watched her grab her phone and get out the booth. Holding up her phone she smiled as I chucked up the deuces. She took the photo and showed me the finished result. Looking at the picture I nodded giving my approval.
“Renee wanted you to park in her guest spot which is located right next to her parking spot.” She said as she got in the booth and raised the gate.
“Thanks baby girl.” I said as I drove off. I pulled into the parking spot next to Renee’s car and got out my Range. I loved my fans. They had helped me get to where I was and was always supporting me. I’d give back to them in any way I could. Looking at Renee I was still smiling from the encounter with my fan.
“Mr. Neverson I don’t appreciate the long wait.” She said.
“Shorty in the booth lost it. It was cute though.”
We got on he elevator making our way to Renee’s apartment. The ride on the elevator was silent but it wasn’t awkward. It was comforting believe it or not. We got off on the fourth floor. As I walked behind Renee I couldn’t help but check her out. ‘What the hell did I do?’ I thought. Business partners? How the hell was I suppose to keep that up? Drunk or not Renee was tempting. I mean did you expect me to work with her and not admire her. I shook my head as we entered her home hoping this night didn’t get fucked up. Taking off my shoes I looked around. Renee’s home was cozy. It was perfect for her. I took off my shoes and made my way to couch plopping down once I reached it.
“Renee you should switch houses with me. I’ll pay rent and everything.” I said.
“How about you pay rent and I can still live here. You can stop by when you want though.” I shook my head at her.
“Oh. What do you want to eat?” She asked. I replied with a shrug before speaking up.
“Whatever you want it doesn’t matter to me. Just wake me up when the food gets here.” I leaned up and removed my wallet from my back pocket. I took out forty dollars because I wasn’t sure what Renee would order but I knew it wouldn’t total more than that. After all it was only two of us. I placed it on the table and got comfortable. Yeah the tables were turned. Now I was comfortable at Renee’s places. It was like we were trading places.
In a few minutes I had knocked out completely. I hadn’t noticed how truly tired I was. While I slept I hadn’t realized Renee was messing with me. About twenty minutes later Renee had woken me up from my little power nap. Grabbing the money I went to the door and saw the delivery guy.
“How much?” I asked. I noticed him looking at me weird but I didn’t think anything of it. I just figured it was because he was looking at Trey Songz.
“17.75.” Handing him one of the twenty dollar bills I told him to keep the change as he handed me the bag. Clsoing the door behind me I headed to the kitchen to see Renee sanding behind the counter.
“Trey I think you have something on your face.” She said giggling.
I placed the food down on the counter before I walked over to a nearby mirror and looked at my reflection. ‘What the fuck?’ Renee’s laughter suddenly filled the air. I glared at her before I took off running. “You gonna pay for this shit.” I was chasing her around her apartment. Finally catching her I wrapped my arms around her, causing her to squeal.
“Renee don’t let me have to mess you up. Get this shit off my face now!”
“But I kinda like your new look.”
“Haha. Very funny but I’m dead serious.”
“Fine! Sit.” She pointed to the chair and I did as told.
She went into her bedroom and came back out with a wipe. Using the wipe she rid my face of the makeup. After a few minutes I checked my reflection and I was good to go. We headed into the kitchen and made our plates. I hadn’t had Chinese in a while so I hope this was good. I sat down behind the counter. “Is water okay with you?” I heard Renee’s voice as she rummaged through her fridge. “Yeah that’s fine.” She handed me a bottle of water and we sat down and ate together,
“I have a question.” Taking a bite of my food I nodded signaling she could carry on with her question.
“Your songs earlier were really nice and touching. Essentially you were writing love songs. I’m not complaining because I actually wanted to melt when you sung ‘You Just Need Me’. You and Sloane aren’t together so I just assumed you’d be sad I guess. One song you were saying you wish you guys hadn’t gone so far then the next you’re like you want her so I guess I was a bit confused. I guess I just wanna know where did you get the emotion to write these songs? What was the inspiration?”
That was a good question that I hadn’t expected her to ask but I’d answer it. Taking a sip of water I began answering Renee’s question.
“Melt? You sound like a fan.” I said with a small laugh before I continued to answer Renee’s question. “Honestly I had to bring my mind somewhere I didn’t want to. Sure Sloane and I are over but we did have good times. We weren’t always so fucked up. At one point I thought she could be the one but obviously I was wrong. ‘Made to be Together’ is a good song having all that raw emotion from the writing process so I decided to record it. As for ‘Can’t be Friends’ that was truth because I don’t know if we can actually have a normal relationship now. I don’t know if it’s possible.” I said with a slight shrug of my shoulders.
“As for ‘You Just Need Me’ that song actually had nothing to do with Sloane. Inspiration behind it was two different things. One was a girl I was feeling and then I also thought of the bullshit I’ve put women through in the past. So for that song I tried to get her perspective. I made myself something like the hero. She’s been through a lot, he’s put her through a lot but I can fix that. I learned from my mistakes, and now I just want to love a woman the way she should be loved. I can do what the other guys can’t do, show her true love.” Renee nodded her head as a smile took over her features. Was that a good thing?
“What’s your story though? Why don’t niggas bring you flowers? Call you, visit you at work?” I looked at Renee feeling weird for knowing so much. “I mean you’ve been with Team Songz for a while I notice a few things.” Taking a few more bites of food, I spoke up. “If it were up to me, you’d have roses at your doorstep every day. Unless you don’t like roses you’d get whatever else you wanted.” I said matter-of-factly. I was getting a little bit too close with Renee, and I hadn’t even had sex with her. There was only one other woman I had been this way with, and her name was Sloane.
Messing with Trey was fun. I was glad he could take a joke. Now that our fun time was over we were eating and talking. I listened attentively as he answered my question. He mentioned thinking Sloane was the one. “You weren’t dumb you were just in love. Love gets the best of us and makes us do dumb things. It’s okay to believe something will last forever even if it won’t.” I said relating to it perfectly. We had all been there. You’re with someone and you think they’re the right one for you only to find out they’re not. It was a rather painful lesson to learn but it was something that needed to be taught. Hmm. A girl he was feeling. That was interesting to say the least.
“You must have been really feeling this girl if she inspired you to write a song.” I said. That song was deep.
Suddenly the conversation had made a turn and now we were talking about me. It wouldn’t have been bad if it was about me but it was about my love life. Did I really wanna share those details with Trey? ‘Stop being unfair Renee! He told you about Sloane and you didn’t even ask. Just talk to him.’ I took a deep breathe. No one bothered to ask me stuff like this besides Alicia. Then again that was her job as a best friend. Turning to Trey I smiled. “That’s really sweet of you Trey. Any girl that gets you is lucky.” I sighed and spoke up. “I took myself off the market. The last guy that was in my life was sweet. We dated about a year and some change. Everything was going fine but then I started to realize my dream and he wasn’t the most supportive. He told me I was too involved in work and this dream. He told me I could pursue my dream at any time and me like the idiot I am I listened. So I put my dream on the back burner for him. I stopped sketching, stop doing fashion shows and stopped looking for a place to open a boutique. I put all my energy into us. In the end he cheated and claimed I was too busy for him.” The memories flooded my head.
Walking down the hallway I had stopped in front of Jordan’s door. I had been working late tonight but we finished up early. Instead of going home I had decided to come surprise Jordan. Honestly work had gotten lot more demanding so when I had time I tried to spend it with Jordan. Standing outside his door I knocked. There was no reply which was weird. It was midnight Jordan should be nowhere but his bed. I knocked a little harder this time.
“Who is it?” Jordan asked.
“Babe, it’s me. Open up.”
“Hold on a second.” Jordan said.
Standing outside I wondered what the hell was taking him so long. I could hear shuffling coming from behind the door. What the hell was he doing? After about a minute or two the door flew open.
“Hey babe, what are you doing here?”
“Everything okay in here? I heard a lot of noise while I was in the hallway.”
“Nah. Everything’s good.”
“Well I thought I’d surprise you. I’ve been working a lot lately which means we haven’t had a lot of time together so I decided to stop by.” I said bypassing him and entering his apartment. He closed the door and followed behind me. I motioned him over to me as I dropped my purse into the couch. Once he stood in front of me I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him. As the seconds passed the kiss got deeper and more passionate. Breaking it I took his hand and lead him to his bedroom. Pushing him down on the bed I straddled him before we began kissing again. A few moments passed and I sat up.
“I gotta pee.” I said getting up and heading to the master bathroom.
“No!” He blurted but it was too late. I had twisted the knob and there stood a girl with a head full of curls in only a bra and a pair of panties.
“Who the fuck is this?” I yelled only to be greeted with silence.
“Do not let me repeat myself!” I turned to face Jordan.
“Babe, ca-” I cut him off.
“Don’t you dare call me babe or tell me to calm down. How long have you been fucking this bitch?” Again I was greeted with silence.
“I’m pretty sure I just asked you a question.”
I turned around to look at the girl. Did she really just speak? Last time I checked I wasn’t addressing her. “Listen to me you little home wrecking bitch you don’t know me so I would suggest you don’t speak before I have to han-.” I was cut off by her laughing.
“On the contrary I do know you Renee. I mean the only time Jordan’s talking about you is when he’s complaining about you but that tells me all it needs to about an uptight bitch like you. You can’t really blame him for trying to find a real woman to fulfill his needs.”
I went to lunge after her but Jordan pulled me back. Getting out his grip I slapped him. “We’ve been together for a year and three months and you’ve been cheating on me for five of those months.”
“If you haven’t noticed you’ve been preoccupied with your own life.” Oh hell no. He was not going to turn this shit around on me.
“Don’t even play yourself and try to put this on me. I put my dreams on the line for you. I haven’t put a pencil to a sketch book in the God knows how long. I stopped trying to find investors and a boutique. My designs have been nonexistent on runways. I stopped everything so we could work on us. What exactly have you done besides sleep with this hoodrat ass hoe?”I asked. I dared him to say some dumb shit.
“You know what I ain’t even mad. You two can have each other because it’s more than obvious you guys deserve each other.”
I walked past Jordan bumping into him. Entering the living room I retrieved my purse and exited his apartment. As soon as I did the tears began falling but I didn’t dare look back.
Tears stung my eyes just like that night and I couldn’t help it. “How could someone tell you they love you and do that to you? How could I love someone like that? I was an idiot and still am. I put everything off for him and he fucked me over in the end.” I said through my sobbing. I got up and got ready to make my way into the bathroom but instead I felt a grip on wrist as Trey pulled me into his chest. Here I was in my apartment crying into Trey’s arms but I didn’t feel like I was embarrassing myself. I couldn’t put my finger on it but something about it just felt right.
